What Shopify costs a month at $10,000, $30,000 and $75,000
Here is an online store with a $100 average order: 100 orders at $10,000 a month, 300 at $30,000 and 750 at $75,000. The first rows assume every card is standard. The "30% premium" rows assume premium cards make up 30% of sales, as an example only, since Shopify does not publish a typical share. Plan prices are monthly billing [1].
| Plan and card mix | $10,000 a month | $30,000 a month | $75,000 a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic, standard cards | $359.00 | $999.00 | $2,439.00 |
| Basic, 30% premium | $377.00 | $1,053.00 | $2,574.00 |
| Grow, standard cards | $405.00 | $1,005.00 | $2,355.00 |
| Grow, 30% premium | $423.00 | $1,059.00 | $2,490.00 |
| Advanced, standard cards | $679.00 | $1,239.00 | $2,499.00 |
The plan fee pays for your whole store, not just payments, so the useful question is when a higher plan's lower rate pays for itself. Grow saves 0.2% of online sales over Basic for $66 more a month, so it breaks even at $33,000 a month. Advanced saves another 0.2% over Grow for $294 more, which needs $147,000 a month. Billing yearly lowers each plan price [1] and moves those break-even points down.
The third-party transaction fee, and why outside processors rarely save money
Shopify charges an extra transaction fee when you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus [1]. That fee comes on top of whatever the outside processor charges.
To test it, we priced an example interchange-plus account from published numbers. Online interchange is Visa's April 2026 card-not-present rate as a stand-in for all cards: 40% regulated debit at 0.05% + 21¢ plus 1¢, 30% basic credit at 1.89% + 10¢ and 30% Visa Infinite at 2.60% + 10¢ [6]. The markup is Helcim's online margin: 0.50% + 25¢ under $50,000 a month and 0.45% + 20¢ above [5]. Network fees are extra and not included.
| Monthly sales and plan | Shopify Payments | Interchange-plus example | + Shopify third-party fee | Outside total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10,000 on Basic | $320.00 | $226.50 | $200.00 (2%) | $426.50 |
| $30,000 on Grow | $900.00 | $679.50 | $300.00 (1%) | $979.50 |
| $75,000 on Advanced | $2,100.00 | $1,623.75 | $450.00 (0.6%) | $2,073.75 |
On Basic and Grow, Shopify Payments wins clearly. On Advanced at $75,000 a month, the outside account is $26.25 cheaper before network fees, which likely erase it. If premium and international cards are a large share of your sales, the gap moves toward interchange-plus, because Shopify charges more for those cards. For most Shopify stores, though, the cheaper move is the right plan, not a new processor.
Selling in person with Shopify POS
In person, Shopify Payments charges 2.6% + 10¢ on Basic, 2.5% + 10¢ on Grow and 2.4% + 10¢ on Advanced, and 3.5% + 10¢ for keyed-in cards [1]. A pop-up with $40 sales on Basic pays $1.14 per sale, or 2.85% of sales.
- POS Pro, for staff roles, in-store inventory and pickup, adds $89 a month for each location [2].
- Shopify's hardware store lists the POS Terminal at $349, the Eddy tablet stand at $149, a receipt printer at $289 and a 2D scanner at $209 [3].
- Shopify's POS page offers free hardware with a year of POS Pro, an offer it values at $2,400 [2]. Read the terms before you count on it.
Chargebacks: Shopify's Help Center says the card issuer takes a chargeback fee when a chargeback is filed, and that Shopify might refund that fee if you win, depending on your country or region [4]. The fee amount was not published on the pages we read.
BatchOut is our own processing service. For most Shopify stores the third-party fee above makes an outside processor hard to justify, and we say so when it is true.
