How the math works

Most business term loans are paid in equal installments. Each payment covers the interest charged on the balance that month, and the rest pays down principal. The calculator uses the standard formula for equal payments and builds the schedule one month at a time.

Two numbers move the payment most: the rate and the term. A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises the total interest, because you owe the money for longer. Run both versions before you choose.

Where SBA loans fit

The SBA's 7(a) program is its main business loan program, and the maximum 7(a) loan is $5 million. Rates are negotiated between you and the lender, subject to SBA maximums tied to the prime rate. Terms are usually ten years or less, and up to 25 years when the loan pays for real estate.
