Tired of lenders who don't get a services business?

A consulting, software or accounting firm has few hard assets to pledge, and that can make a bank meeting feel like a dead end. In Middlesex it is not: professional, scientific and technical firms got 80 SBA loans here since October 2023, more than any other industry in the county [1].

Those loans are on the public record, with sizes and lenders. Knowing what your peers borrowed puts you on firmer ground when you ask.

Is it a fit for you?

It fits when

  • A Middlesex consulting, engineering, software or accounting firm that needs working capital or wants to buy out a partner
  • A trucking or freight company based in Edison, Carteret or nearby towns that needs trucks or a cash cushion between invoices
  • A retailer in Carteret, New Brunswick or Perth Amboy weighing the UEZ sales tax benefit
  • Anyone who wants free counseling from the TCNJ small business center before applying

Look elsewhere when

  • You need the money this week; SBA approval runs on a lender's timeline, not a funder's
  • You hoped for a county grant; we found none listed for Middlesex as of Oct 20, 2026
  • Your trucking customers pay in 60 to 90 days and you want to sell those invoices; see invoice factoring instead

Two industries set Middlesex apart: professional services and trucking

Middlesex had 22,314 business establishments and 434,143 employees in 2023, and 18,610 of those establishments had fewer than 20 people [2]. Two counts stand out against every other New Jersey county [2]:

IndustryMiddlesexNext highest NJ county
Professional, scientific and technical services4,122Bergen, 3,929
Truck transportation808Hudson, 580

Retail (2,408 locations), ambulatory health care (1,966) and restaurants (1,585) round out the county's base [2]. So a Middlesex owner asking about a loan may well run a consulting firm or a truck fleet, not a shop.

Inside professional services, custom computer programming firms led with 20 loans, then other computer services (8), accounting (7) and management consulting (6) [1]. Freight trucking firms took 18 local and 13 long-distance truckload loans, mostly small: medians of $52,500 and $74,500 [1]. Liquor stores borrowed big, with 15 loans at a median of $1,215,000 [1].

Worked example: $187,500 for a Middlesex tech or consulting firm

The median SBA loan to a Middlesex professional services firm was $187,500 [1]. Here is what that costs at the most the SBA allows.

$187,500 SBA 7(a), 7-year term, at the rate cap

Loans from $50,001 to $250,000 are capped at the base rate plus 6.0% [3]. Prime was 7.00% on the Federal Reserve's Oct 20, 2026 release [4], so the cap is 13.0%.

Monthly payment: $3,410.99. Total interest over 7 years: $99,023.42. A lender may quote less than the cap, never more. Add any guaranty fee and closing costs the lender passes on.

A firm with steady receivables but lumpy cash flow may do better with a revolving line of credit for the gaps and a term loan only for the big purchase.

Edison borrowers took the most loans (75), then East Brunswick (61), Piscataway (43), North Brunswick (38), Monroe Township (28) and Old Bridge (27) [1]. The 18 SBA 504 loans for real estate and heavy equipment went through Trenton Business Assistance Corporation (13) and Empire State Certified Development Corporation (5) [1].

Carteret, New Brunswick and Perth Amboy: the UEZ towns, plus free help

Three Middlesex towns are in New Jersey's Urban Enterprise Zone program: Carteret, New Brunswick and Perth Amboy [5]. A certified business there can collect sales tax at the reduced rate of 3.3125% on most in-person sales at its zone location, half the normal rate [6]. For a retailer that is a price edge, not a loan, but it changes your margins and what you can afford to borrow.

Middlesex also has 13 Opportunity Zone tracts from 2018: six in New Brunswick, four in Perth Amboy, and one each in Carteret, Jamesburg and South River [7].

  • Middlesex County Office of Business Engagement, which helps companies relocate, expand or start up in the county [8].
  • NJSBDC at The College of New Jersey, which serves Hunterdon, Somerset, Middlesex and Mercer counties from Trenton Hall, 2000 Pennington Avenue, Ewing, (609) 789-8364 [9].

Card processing for Middlesex County businesses

Middlesex had 1,585 restaurants, 2,408 retailers and 599 food and beverage stores in 2023 [2], from sit-down dining rooms to grocery and specialty food shops. Restaurants alone made up 7.1% of the county's business locations [2].

Picture a $60 dinner check. Square's in-person 2.6% + 15¢ [12] takes $1.71. A debit card from a large bank pays that bank interchange of no more than 21¢ plus 0.05% [11], 24¢ on $60. Tips added after the swipe raise the charged amount and the fee with it, so price your average check including the tip.

New Jersey's P.L.2023, c.146 allows a credit card surcharge only up to your actual cost of processing [10]. The credit card processing fees guide shows how the pieces stack, and the fee analyzer works from your real statement.

Faster, costlier options when SBA timing does not work

Truckers usually look at equipment financing for tractors and invoice factoring for slow-paying shippers. Service firms often pair an SBA loan with a line of credit. A merchant cash advance is a purchase of future receivables, not a loan, and usually costs the most. Batch Capital can lay the options side by side once you finish the quiz.
