Only need a small amount and feel silly asking?

Hudson is where small loans are normal. Its median SBA loan, $132,800, is the lowest of the ten New Jersey counties that have their own page on this site, and 276 of its 464 SBA loans were $150,000 or less [1].

Some of the biggest lenders here go even smaller: M&T Bank's median Hudson loan was $35,000 and TD Bank's was $50,000 [1]. And Jersey City's own revolving loan fund lends up to $25,000 [6]. A small, specific request is a perfectly ordinary application here.

Is it a fit for you?

It fits when

  • A Jersey City business that needs $25,000 or less for equipment, inventory or working capital
  • A Hudson restaurant, takeout spot or caterer looking at an SBA 7(a) loan
  • A retailer in one of Hudson's seven UEZ towns who wants the reduced sales tax rate
  • An owner in Hoboken, Union City, Bayonne or North Bergen comparing local and SBA lenders

Look elsewhere when

  • A nonprofit; the JCEDC revolving loan fund does not lend to nonprofits
  • You cannot offer collateral or a personal guarantee; the JCEDC loan requires both
  • You need cash in a day or two; SBA and city loans take longer

Jersey City small business loans and grants: what is on offer

Jersey City ZIP codes held 5,222 establishments in 2023, second only to Newark among New Jersey mailing cities [2]. Jersey City borrowers took 191 SBA loans worth $69.2 million from FY2024 to June 2026, the most of any town in the state, at a median of $150,000 [1]. Residential remodelers (11), limited-service restaurants (9) and pet care businesses (8) were the most common types [1].

In Jersey City, M&T Bank, not TD Bank, made the most SBA loans: M&T made 35, Northeast Bank 26 and TD Bank 21 [1].

On grants: the Jersey City Economic Development Corporation says it connects businesses with grants, low-interest loans and Urban Enterprise Zone incentives [7]. The specific program it lists with terms is the loan above. We did not find an open Jersey City grant with published amounts on Oct 20, 2026.

Worked example: a $25,000 loan for a Jersey City food business

Food service tied professional services for the most SBA loans in Hudson, 61 each, and 16 of the 61 food loans were $50,000 or less [1]. For a small kitchen upgrade, compare the city fund to the SBA ceiling.

$25,000 over 6 years, two ways

JCEDC revolving loan fund at 4.5% [6]: $396.85 a month, $3,573.25 in total interest.

SBA 7(a) at its cap: loans of $50,000 or less are capped at the base rate plus 6.5% [3], or 13.5% with prime at 7.00% on Oct 20, 2026 [4]. That works out to $508.47 a month and $11,610.13 in interest, before fees. Lenders may quote below the cap.

Hudson's business base: dense, small and food-heavy

Hudson had 14,119 establishments and 253,652 employees in 2023; 12,241 of those establishments had fewer than 20 people [2]. Restaurants and other eating places made up 1,473 of them, about 10% of the county total [2]. Hudson also has 580 trucking establishments and 273 child care centers, both second in New Jersey [2].

M&T Bank63$35,000
Newtek Bank50$150,000
Northeast Bank46$100,000

After Jersey City, Hudson's busiest SBA towns were Hoboken (57 loans), North Bergen (52), Union City (49), Bayonne (37) and West New York (29) [1].

Seven Urban Enterprise Zone towns, more than any other county

Bayonne, Guttenberg, Jersey City, Kearny, North Bergen, Union City and West New York are all in New Jersey's UEZ program [5]. A certified business may collect sales tax at 3.3125% on qualifying sales at its zone location, half the usual rate [8]. Hudson also has 21 Opportunity Zone tracts from 2018: 11 in Jersey City, 4 in Union City, 2 each in Bayonne and North Bergen, and 1 each in Kearny and West New York [9].

Card processing for Hudson County businesses

Hudson packs 1,473 restaurants, 645 food and beverage stores and 136 laundries into a small, dense county, with 2,025 retail locations in 2023 [2]. In Jersey City, Hoboken and Union City, a big share of card sales is a coffee, a slice or a quick lunch.

Small tickets are where card pricing hurts most. On a $10 coffee and bagel, Square's in-person 2.6% + 15¢ [14] costs 41¢, about 4.1%. A debit card from a large bank carries interchange of no more than 21¢ plus 0.05% of the sale [13], 21.5¢ on $10, so even the floor is about 2%. A high-volume counter should look first at the fixed per-sale fee, not the headline percent.

If you surcharge credit cards, New Jersey's P.L.2023, c.146 caps the surcharge at your actual cost to process [12]. Compare pricing models in our credit card processing fees guide and test your numbers in the fee analyzer.

Need more than a city loan but faster than SBA? Compare a term loan or line of credit. Kitchens and trucks fit equipment financing. A merchant cash advance is a purchase of future receivables, not a loan, and usually costs the most. Batch Capital can line them up after the quiz.
