Stripe review: strong online tools and fair prices, weak on account holds

We score Stripe 3.4 out of 5: a strong fit for businesses that sell mainly online or through software, with no monthly fee and 24x7 support, but its reserve terms and hold complaints weigh it down [1][3][7].

The worry behind a Stripe search is usually about the money, not the code.

Owners who look up Stripe reviews have often read a story about a frozen payout and want to know whether it will happen to them. Most Stripe accounts run without a reserve. When Stripe does set one, its agreement says it will tell you the reserve terms in a notice [3], and you can close your account at any time from the Dashboard [2].

Below is what Stripe charges, what its agreement actually allows, how often owners report holds, and what you can do to keep your payouts moving.

Holds and termination risk25%1.0Stripe holds sole control of any reserve and releases it only when it is satisfied the risk is gone [3]; 37 of 63 organic reviews in our sample (59 per 100) describe holds, withheld payouts or closures [7]. We used the worse signal.

Total cost15%4.0At $30,000 a month in 1,200 in-person sales, 2.7% + 5¢ comes to $870, an effective 2.90%, with no monthly fee [1].
Support10%4.5Stripe says all customers get 24x7 phone, email and chat help [6]. Minus 0.5 because 27 of 63 organic reviews in our sample complain about reaching a person or getting only automated replies [7].
Customer evidence10%1.0Organic average 1.4 stars (rounds to 1.5) with no invited reviews in our sample [7]. Minus 0.5 because the profile shows 38% five-star against that average. We found no regulator settlement in the last five years.

Is it a fit for you?

It fits when

  • Most of your sales happen on a website, an app or a subscription, and you want strong checkout tools.
  • Your website builder, booking tool or software already runs payments through Stripe.
  • You want round-the-clock phone and chat help without paying for a support plan.
  • You sell in person now and then, at events or pop-ups, alongside an online store.

Look elsewhere when

  • You want a full counter POS with menus, staff and inventory out of the box. Stripe is built online-first.
  • Your business model sits on Stripe's restricted list or draws frequent disputes.
  • You cannot afford a payout pause of several weeks without missing payroll.
  • Large one-off invoices make up most of your revenue and you have little sales history.

Our verdict: 3.4 out of 5

Stripe is an online-first payments platform. It began as a tool for developers adding payments to websites, and its in-person product, Terminal, plugs into that same system. Sign-up is quick, and Stripe keeps the right to review your account, hold payouts or ask for more documents after you start selling [3]. You sign the Stripe Services Agreement, not a bank merchant agreement.

Three things decide it. First, the price is public and fair, with no monthly fee, and the 5¢ in-person per-sale fee is among the lowest we see [1]. Second, you can leave whenever you like [2]. Third, its own review record on holds is poor: more than half of the recent organic reviews we read describe money held back or an account shut down [7].

Pros

  • No setup, monthly or hidden fees on standard pricing [1]
  • In-person rate of 2.7% + 5¢, low on small tickets [1]
  • 24x7 phone, email and chat for every customer [6]
  • Cancel anytime by closing the account in the Dashboard [2]

Cons

  • Reserve release is at Stripe's judgment, with no set date [3]
  • Hold or closure stories in 59 of every 100 organic reviews we read [7]
  • Card fees are not returned when you refund a sale [1]
  • No built-in counter POS; in-person setups need an app or integration [5]

On our reference shop, $30,000 a month in person as 1,200 sales of $25, Stripe charges 2.7% of $30,000 ($810) plus 5¢ times 1,200 ($60): $870 a month, or 2.90% [1]. Interchange on that card mix is about $526.50 using Visa's April 2026 rates [8], so Stripe keeps roughly $343.50. Online, the 30¢ weighs more: a $50 order costs $1.75, which is 3.5% of the sale.

  • Refunds: no fee to issue one, but the original processing fee is not returned [1].
  • A lost, contested dispute costs $30 in fees plus the sale itself [1].
  • Large or unusual businesses can ask for custom pricing, including interchange-plus [1].

Contract, cancellation and hardware

There is no fixed term and no early termination fee. The agreement says: "User may terminate this Agreement at any time by closing its Stripe Account via the Stripe Dashboard" [2]. The same section lets Stripe end the agreement or close your account at any time, with notice as the law requires [2]. So the freedom runs both ways.

Stripe Reader S700 (countertop with screen)$299 [5]
Stripe Reader S710$299 [5]

Readers are bought, not leased, and there is no monthly hardware bill. The catch is software. Stripe says you can build your own POS app, use one of hundreds of third-party POS integrations, or use its no-code option [5]. A shop that wants a ready-made counter system with menus and staff logins will usually pair Stripe with another company's software, which may carry its own monthly fee.

Holds, reserves and account terminations

Stripe's Service Terms, part of the Stripe Services Agreement, let it set a reserve and send you a Reserve Notice with the terms [3]. They say "Stripe has sole control over the Reserve" and that Stripe "will release to User any funds forming part of the Reserve only if, and to the extent that, Stripe is satisfied that the relevant risk exposure has been mitigated" [3]. Stripe may also "impose an additional holding period before making the initial settlement" to your bank, and may delay or withhold a payout if it reasonably believes a dispute is likely [3].

Stripe's own guide shows how a typical rolling reserve works: a 10% reserve held 90 days means $10 of a $100 sale comes back three months later if nothing goes wrong [4]. The same guide says low-risk businesses may see 30 to 90 day periods and higher-risk ones 180 days or more [4]. On our $30,000 reference month, a 10% reserve would tie up about $9,000 once fully built.

Our sample: we read the three most recent pages of Stripe's Trustpilot profile on Oct 21, 2026, 63 reviews, none labeled as invited. Of those, 37 describe a payout on hold, funds withheld, a reserve, or an account paused or closed [7]. That is 59 per 100. Many reviewers wrote from outside the U.S., and recent pages draw people with problems, so treat this as a strong warning rather than a measured rate.

Termination has a second cost. If an acquirer closes an account for certain reasons, such as excessive chargebacks, it must add the business to the Mastercard MATCH list within 1 business day [9]. That listing can make a new account hard to open anywhere.

  1. Fill in your business details, website, refund policy and product description completely before your first sale.
  2. Tell Stripe ahead of a launch, a presale or a big invoice that will spike volume.
  3. Ship fast and upload tracking; a likely dispute is a stated reason for delaying a payout [3].
  4. Keep disputes low. Stripe's MATCH guide says Mastercard chargebacks above 1% of monthly Mastercard sales transactions, totaling $5,000 or more in the same month, meet the excessive chargeback code [9].

Support and customer evidence

Stripe's support plans page says "All Stripe customers receive 24x7 phone, email, and chat help" [6]. That comes with no paid support plan. The reviews tell a rougher story: 27 of the 63 in our sample complain about bots, unanswered emails or no one to call [7]. We cut half a point for that.

Trustpilot marks Stripe as a company that asks customers for reviews [7]. Its 38% five-star share sits far above the 1.4-star average of the recent organic reviews we read, which is why we do not lean on the headline number.

Alternatives to Stripe

  • Shopify POS: worth comparing if your online store already runs on Shopify and you want one system for web and counter.
  • Square: a ready-made counter POS with no monthly fee (our processing service, BatchOut, earns money on Square sign-ups).
  • PayPal Point of Sale: low per-sale fee in person and Venmo QR payments at the counter.
  • Helcim: interchange-plus pricing for a growing online or in-person business.
