Dharma Merchant Services review: the lowest published markup we priced, from a New Jersey-addressed processor

We score Dharma Merchant Services 3.9 out of 5: its posted 0.15% + 8¢ markup and $20 monthly fee made it the cheapest provider we priced for established, lower-risk shops, but support keeps short weekday hours [1][6].

Dharma publishes more of its price than most processors do. Its rate page lists the markup, the monthly fee, the chargeback fee, the closing fee and even a list of fees it does not charge [1]. It also posts the bank program guide that governs your account [5], so you can read the reserve rules before you apply.

Those rules are the standard bank ones, and they are not gentle: the bank side can set a reserve at its own discretion [4]. But in the reviews we read, no organic reviewer described held funds or a closed account [7]. Here is the full picture.

Is it a fit for you?

It fits when

  • Established retail, service and professional businesses with a processing history and low chargebacks.
  • Shops selling $10,000 a month or more that want the lowest posted markup we found.
  • Owners who want to read their bank program guide before they sign [5].
  • New Jersey businesses that like a provider with a mailing address in the state [6].

Look elsewhere when

  • High-risk businesses; Dharma says it does not process for high-risk industries [10].
  • Brand new businesses that want a quick yes, since Dharma expects more documents from them [10].
  • Anyone who needs phone help in the evening or on weekends [6].
  • Very small sellers, where the $20 monthly fee is a large share of sales.

Our verdict: 3.9 out of 5, the best posted price, standard bank terms

Dharma Merchant Services scores 3.9 out of 5. It is a merchant account provider, not a payment facilitator: its footer says it is a registered ISO/MSP of Synovus Bank, and its accounts run on the TSYS or First Data networks [1][6]. The terms of your account sit in a Priority Payments program guide for Synovus Bank, which Dharma posts on its own site [5].

Three things decide it. Price: at 0.15% + 8¢ above interchange with a $20 monthly fee [1], it came in lowest of the three interchange-plus providers we priced. Eligibility: it turns away high-risk industries and asks new businesses for extra papers [10]. Support: a small team with weekday office hours [6].

Pros

  • Lowest posted markup we priced: 0.15% + 8¢ in person [1]
  • Lists no early termination, PCI, batch or annual fees [1]
  • Posts its bank program guide for anyone to read [5]
  • No organic review in our sample described a hold [7]

Cons

  • $49 fee to close the account [1]
  • Reserves set at the bank side's discretion, held 10 months after closing [4]
  • Support only on weekdays, ending at 2 p.m. Fridays [6]
  • Not open to high-risk industries [10]

Dharma pricing and fees

Dharma posts separate rate pages by type of business. The table uses the small business and retail page for in-person sales [1] and the online page for card-not-present sales [2].

FundingNext day for card-present merchants [1]

For a like-for-like cost, we used our standard shop of $25 in-person sales and Visa's April 2026 interchange as a stand-in for every card: 40% regulated debit (with the 1¢ fraud add-on), 30% basic credit at 1.51% + 10¢ and 30% Visa Infinite at 2.30% + 10¢, which averages 1.755% of sales [3].

Monthly card salesInterchange (1.755%) [3]Dharma markup [1]Monthly fee [1]TotalEffective rate
$10,000 (400 sales)$175.500.15% = $15 + 400 x 8¢ = $32$20$242.502.43%
$30,000 (1,200 sales)$526.500.15% = $45 + 1,200 x 8¢ = $96$20$687.502.29%
$75,000 (3,000 sales)$1,316.250.15% = $112.50 + 3,000 x 8¢ = $240$20$1,688.752.25%

The $75,000 row stays on standard pricing because 3,000 sales is under Dharma's 5,000 sale high-volume line [9]. Dharma is unusual in also showing card network assessments on its own page. Its worked example for a $100 sale on a regulated Visa debit card adds 0.13% + 2¢ in assessments, for total fees of $0.65 [1]. So expect the real bill to run a little above our table.

Contract, cancellation and hardware

Dharma's rate page says "No long-term contracts" and lists the early termination fee as one it does not charge [1]. Leaving does cost $49, which Dharma calls a closure fee [1]. There is one mismatch to know about. The Synovus program guide Dharma posts says the agreement runs for an initial term of three years [4]. Since Dharma says it charges no early termination fee, the term should not cost you money to break, but ask Dharma to confirm the no-fee exit in your application papers.

First Data FD-150 countertop terminal$295 [8]
ValorPay VL100 Pro countertop terminal$295 [8]
FD-150 with RP-10 PIN pad$480 [8]
Clover Flex$749 plus a monthly Clover subscription [8]
Clover Flex on 4G/LTE instead of WiFi$35 a month extra [8]

Dharma advertises no long-term leasing [1], so you own what you buy. The MX Merchant virtual terminal and mobile app come free with every account [1], which lets a service business take cards with no device at all.

Holds, reserves and account terminations

Because Dharma accounts are bank merchant accounts, the reserve rules come from the program guide, not from Dharma's marketing pages. The guide says the reserve amount is "set by us, in our sole and unfettered discretion" based on your processing history and risk of loss [4]. It can be funded at once for fraud, suspected fraud or unusual activity, or after three days' notice [4].

The release timing is written down, which many agreements leave out. A reserve is held for the greater of ten months after termination or as long as card network rules leave the bank exposed to chargebacks [4]. Reserve money is pooled with other merchants' reserves, without an escrow agent [4]. On ending the account, the processor, the bank or Dharma may terminate for any reason with 30 days' notice, or sooner after an event of default [4].

None of that showed up in the reviews. We read 60 Trustpilot reviews across three pages, 47 of them unprompted, and found no organic review describing held funds, a reserve or a closure [7]. Two one-star reviews described delayed deposits and lost tips, not holds. One caution: many reviews on pages two and three date from 2020 and 2021, so the sample leans older than for larger processors.

  • Apply with recent bank and processing statements; Dharma says it relies on processing history to judge risk [10].
  • Close your daily batch before your platform's cut-off so deposits land on the expected day.
  • Tell Dharma before any large or unusual sale.

Of the 47 organic reviews, 40 gave five stars, 1 gave three stars and 6 gave one star. Several of the one-star reviews were about service, such as a refused request to speak with a manager or calls that got no reply [7]. With 142 reviews in total, Dharma's profile is far smaller than those of the big processors, so each review moves its score more.

Dharma Merchant Services alternatives

  • Helcim: no monthly fee and no closure fee, at a slightly higher markup, with support on Saturdays.
  • Stax: no percentage markup at all, but a $99 to $199+ monthly membership.
  • Clover: a full point of sale system if you need software more than the lowest rate. See Clover fees.
  • Square (our processing service, BatchOut, earns money on Square sign-ups): faster to open for new businesses, at a flat rate that costs more at volume.

If you are under a contract today, read how to switch processors and check for a lease before you move.
