Auto repair shop financing

Auto repair shops usually finance lifts, scan tools and alignment machines with equipment financing, buy a shop with an SBA 7(a) or 504 loan, and use a line of credit for parts and payroll.

Big tools, uneven weeks

A shop can have a full bay schedule and an empty bank account in the same week. Parts get paid for before the customer picks up the car, and one new lift can cost more than a month of profit.

Lenders see this pattern all the time. In New Jersey, general auto repair shops took 84 SBA loans from October 2023 through June 2026 [1]. Shops like yours borrow on normal terms every year. The work is matching the product to the purchase.

Is it a fit for you?

It fits when

  • You are adding a lift, an alignment rack, a diagnostic scanner or an EV charger and service tools.
  • You are buying out a retiring owner or a partner.
  • You want to buy the building your shop rents.
  • You have steady car counts and a year or more of bank statements.

Look elsewhere when

  • You want to use funding to cover a comeback or warranty dispute you have not resolved.
  • Your plan is to pay one advance with another.
  • You cannot show the purchase raises car count or ticket size.
  • You are opening with no lease, tools or customer base yet; start with savings or an SBA microloan.

What New Jersey repair shops borrow

A merchant cash advance is the fast, costly fallback. We counted SBA 7(a) and 504 loans to New Jersey borrowers in the SBA's public loan file for fiscal 2024 through June 30, 2026 [1]. Shops are coded by type, so mechanical repair and collision work show up separately.

SBA loans to New Jersey auto repair businesses, FY2024 to Jun 30, 2026 (SBA FOIA file, our count)
Shop typeLoansTotal approvedMiddle (median) loanChange of ownership
General automotive repair (NAICS 811111)84$31.6 million$180,00014
Body, paint and interior repair (NAICS 811121)34$18.9 million$250,0005

Two things to notice. One in six general repair loans paid for a change of ownership [1]. That is the classic shop story: a tech buys the business from the owner who trained them. And 37 of the 84 used SBA Express [1], the faster track where the lender decides without SBA review, capped at $500,000 [4].

The Census counted 4,646 automotive repair and maintenance businesses in New Jersey in 2023, employing 25,528 people, and 2,502 of them were general repair shops [2].

Lifts, scan tools and alignment machines

Equipment financing is built for a shop. The lift or machine secures the deal, so the lender worries less about your credit file and more about the equipment's value. NerdWallet puts rates at roughly 4% to 45% APR, depending on the lender, your credit and how long the equipment lasts [5].

  • A two-post lift or alignment rack lasts years, so a longer term keeps the payment small next to the work it brings in.
  • Scan tools and software age fast. Keep those terms short, or pay cash.
  • Ask whether installation and freight can be financed. Some lenders cover soft costs on top of the full price [5].
  • Used equipment can be financed too. Ask how the lender values it.

Buying the shop, or the building

A 7(a) loan covers buying a business outright or buying out a partner, plus working capital and equipment in the same loan, up to $5 million [3]. The seller's books, tax returns and car counts become your application, so ask for them early.

If the real asset is the building, the SBA 504 loan is designed for major fixed assets, with long-term fixed rates [6]. Three New Jersey general repair loans in our count were 504 loans [1]. Older garages can carry environmental questions, such as old lifts and fluid storage, so expect the lender to ask about the site's history.

The cash advance math, before you sign

Shops with steady card deposits get cash advance offers quickly. An MCA is a purchase of future receivables, collected by a split of sales or a fixed debit, subject to reconciliation. Factor rates typically run 1.1 to 1.5, and many advances are repaid within three to 18 months [7].

Use the calculator above. Put in the advance amount, the factor rate and how long payback will take. Then put the same amount in an equipment loan for the lift you actually need. A short payback raises the estimated APR, because the same dollar cost is squeezed into less time.

Parts runs and daily debits

If your parts supplier wants payment on delivery and the advance takes a fixed debit every day, two cash demands hit the same account. Ask how reconciliation works before slow weeks, not after.

Card fees on big repair tickets

A $2,000 brake and suspension job paid by card carries a real fee. Every half a percent of fees on that ticket is $10. Know your effective rate, total fees divided by card sales, and run your statement through the fee analyzer.

Thinking of a credit card surcharge in New Jersey? The law caps it at the actual cost to process the card, and a shop must post a clear notice on a sign at the point of entry and the point of sale before the customer is charged [8]. Other states differ; see the surcharge law table.

Getting ready to apply

  1. Six months of business bank statements and your card processing statements.
  2. Your shop management system's report of car count and average repair order.
  3. Quotes for the equipment, or the purchase agreement for the shop.
  4. Your lease, or the property details if you are buying.

The quiz starts with your industry and the purpose filled in. It shows the products that fit and their cost ranges. If you ask for offers, your request goes only to Batch Capital, our own funding service.
